The FAST Coordinator has compiled a collection of HIPAA policies to help our facility create a culture of caring and respect toward electronic patient information while satisfying our legal responsibility to protect patient privacy.

UCD researchers using patient health information may be required to complete at least the first two of the following CU Online university-wide courses. I strongly suggest completing all of them. They are not difficult and you will learn security skills that you may want to apply to other private electronic information.

HIPAA 101
HIPAA 201 (Research)
HIPAA Refresher UCDHSC
HIPAA Patient's Rights-HSC

After you have completed your HIPAA coursework for the university, HIPAA documentation will be easier to understand and manage.

HIPAA Documentation

FAST HIPAA documentation supports and defers to UCD HIPAA Documentation. Become familiar with UCD HIPAA policies and requirements at:

http://www.uchsc.edu/hipaa/

In the following metatdata you will find links to each document. Documents superceded by UCD HIPAA Documentation are noted and links are provided to the UCD HIPAA Document.

HIPAA documentation is typically divided into two basic realms: Privacy Practices and Security Practices. In general the documents categorized as Privacy Practices address the need-to-know of Researchers. Security Practices dictate to Administrators of computer systems. If a Researcher is also Administrator to their own personal computer where protected patient information resides, the Researcher will need to understand and implement both Privacy Practices and Security Practices.
